Life of James Fiddaman

  • 'James Fiddaman (1822-1884) - An Uncommon Tradesman' - a potted history published in the Norfolk Ancestor.
  • Extracts from our book 'Glimpses of Fiddaman's Lynn' - a few of the stories of life at Lynn in the latter part of the 19th century seen through the eyes of James Fiddaman - publican, wine merchant, promoter of entertainments ... and probably bookmaker.
  • Ghosts - we know that James and Jemima Fiddaman are somewhere in this photograph!
  • James Fiddaman's last will and testament - a remarkable insight into his wealth and possessions, remembering dozens of family members, friends, employees and charities.
  • 'Fiddaman's field' - used by Frank Lockwood, one of the Liberal candidates in the 1880 Lynn borough election, to enliven his address at the Music Hall. The story of his dream in which Sir W. Ffolkes, the Hon Robert Bourke, Lord Claud Hamilton and himself were all runners on 'Fiddaman's field'. The audience had roared with laughter as John Dyker Thew was portrayed as the proprietor of a political popgun, running about the field and selling correct cards at 2d each, while 'very fierce about the face and very mild about the legs'. Sir Lewis Whincop Jarvis had fared little better 'with a yellow hat on, surrounded by his large and intellectual family in yellow pinafores'. Yet no one had laughed at Fiddaman's field.
  • Fiddaman family trees - what we know so far about James Fiddaman's family. There are still many gaps in our knowledge!
